🪰 fruitflyheaven

A stylized fruit fly connectome — real circuit motifs, not the full 130,000-neuron reconstruction — flying a virtual fly around a garden. Retina bins feed lobula columnar cells and antennal glomeruli, which mix in the mushroom body's Kenyon cells; the fly's actual choices come out of the central complex's heading and goal rings. Every fruit eaten potentiates the mushroom-body pathway for whatever it just smelled and saw — so late in a session the fly beelines for fruit it barely noticed at first. Click the garden to drop more fruit. Further down, query an actual EM-reconstructed connectome live for real neurons and real synapse counts.

query the real connectome

The garden above is a stylized ~50-node model, not the real thing — a literal 130,000-neuron brain can't run at 60fps in a tab, and FlyWire's full-brain data (Codex/CAVE) intentionally has no public live-query API, sign-in-gated by design. What is real and publicly queryable: neuPrint's hemibrain dataset — an actual EM reconstruction of ~25,000 traced neurons in this same fly's central brain. Paste a free personal token (neuprint.janelia.org → account menu → "Auth Token") and look up a real cell type's real synaptic partners, queried live from Janelia's own database — straight from your browser to theirs, your token never touches this site's server.
